Huawei Unveils Pura X Flip Phone Featuring HarmonyOS 5 and DeepSeek-Powered AI Assistant

Shenzhen, China — In a bold move signaling its shift away from U.S. technologies, Huawei has launched its latest foldable device, the Huawei Pura X, marking a significant milestone in the company’s Android-free journey. Priced at approximately $1,037 (7,499 Chinese yuan), the Pura X introduces several standout features aimed at redefining the foldable smartphone space.

Wide 6.3-Inch Display and Innovative Design

Unlike traditional flip phones, the Huawei Pura X features a distinctive 6.3-inch wideset display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, breaking away from the industry’s standard tall and narrow foldable screen formats. The device’s broader canvas is designed to improve multitasking and media consumption, appealing to productivity-focused users and content creators alike.

HarmonyOS 5 and the End of Android for Huawei

The Pura X is Huawei’s first flip phone to fully operate on HarmonyOS 5, completely removing Google’s Android ecosystem from its framework. This marks a pivotal shift for the company following years of U.S. sanctions that have limited its access to American software and hardware technologies.

Huawei has been gradually expanding its HarmonyOS ecosystem, which powers not just smartphones but also a wide range of its IoT devices, including wearables, tablets, and smart home products.

Debut of Xiaoyi: AI Assistant Powered by DeepSeek Collaboration

A key highlight of the Pura X is the introduction of Xiaoyi, Huawei’s newly enhanced AI assistant. Built on a combination of Huawei’s proprietary AI technologies and models developed by DeepSeek AI, a leading Chinese artificial intelligence firm, Xiaoyi is designed to compete with major global AI assistants like Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s Bixby.

Xiaoyi promises faster and more contextually aware voice commands, multilingual capabilities, and seamless integration with HarmonyOS apps and Huawei’s cloud services.

A Strategic Pivot Amid Global Challenges

Since the onset of U.S. restrictions, Huawei has faced mounting challenges in maintaining its competitive edge in global markets. The release of the Pura X represents a clear commitment to strengthening its self-reliant hardware-software ecosystem.

With other recent launches such as the Huawei Mate 60 Pro and the Huawei Pocket 2, both featuring HarmonyOS and advanced hardware such as in-house Kirin chipsets, the company is steadily building a robust portfolio independent of U.S. technologies.

Huawei Eyes Growth in Domestic and Emerging Markets

While Huawei continues to face restrictions in Western markets, the Pura X is expected to perform well in China, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East, where demand for non-Android alternatives is growing. Analysts at Counterpoint Research suggest that Huawei’s focus on HarmonyOS and AI-driven features could carve out a loyal customer base, especially among tech enthusiasts seeking alternatives to mainstream Android devices.

What’s Next for Huawei?

In addition to advancing its foldable phone lineup, Huawei has hinted at deeper collaborations with domestic AI companies like iFlytek and Baidu, potentially integrating their AI models into future HarmonyOS devices. Industry watchers expect further diversification into automotive tech, cloud services, and AI-powered smart devices.

  • Huawei Mate 60 Pro: Flagship phone with satellite communication capabilities and HarmonyOS 4.
  • Huawei Watch Ultimate: Premium smartwatch with diving-level waterproofing and advanced health tracking.
  • Huawei Vision Glass: Augmented reality glasses compatible with HarmonyOS devices.
