OpenAI Unveils New Developer Tools to Power Advanced AI Agents

San Francisco, CAMarch 10, 2025 – OpenAI has introduced two new developer tools—the Responses API and the Agents SDK—designed to help developers build and manage AI agents efficiently. These tools are aimed at simplifying AI-driven automation, allowing developers to create AI agents capable of performing web searches, file management, and task execution with minimal effort.

Empowering Developers with AI Agent Capabilities

As AI agents become an integral part of the future of artificial intelligence, OpenAI is positioning itself as a leader in this transformation. The newly launched Responses API provides developers with essential building blocks to integrate real-time data retrieval, document processing, and computer-based automation into their applications.

According to Olivier Godement, Head of Product for OpenAI’s Platform, OpenAI aims to support developers in building AI agents tailored to industry-specific needs.

“There are some agents that we will be able to build ourselves, like Deep Research and Operator,” said Godement. “But the world is so complex, with so many industries and use cases. We’re excited to provide the foundations for developers to build the best agents tailored to their needs.”

The Responses API is built on GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, offering a powerful web search tool that delivers real-time results with citations, ensuring accuracy and reliability. The API also features an Operator model, which enables AI agents to perform actions on behalf of users—such as retrieving files, automating tasks, or even interacting with applications.

Additionally, OpenAI highlights the Responses API’s capability to process large sets of documents, making it a valuable tool for industries like legal research, customer support automation, and enterprise-level data analysis.

Introducing the Agents SDK: Orchestrating AI Workflows

To further enhance AI agent capabilities, OpenAI has also launched the Agents SDK, a framework that allows developers to manage multiple AI agents working together.

“The Responses API is like an atomic unit that lets models and tools perform specific tasks,” explained Nikunj Handa, Product Manager for OpenAI’s API team. “The Agents SDK, on the other hand, allows multiple of these units to collaborate and solve more complex problems.”

This means developers can design multi-step AI workflows, where different AI agents coordinate and execute tasks efficiently. For example, an AI system could:

  • Retrieve relevant legal documents
  • Summarize key findings
  • Generate a structured report for a lawyer

This orchestration makes AI agents significantly more powerful and adaptable to real-world applications.

Phasing Out the Assistants API

As part of its long-term AI development strategy, OpenAI announced plans to replace the Assistants API with the Responses API by mid-2026. The company states that this decision is based on developer feedback and improvements made in accuracy, efficiency, and usability.

By streamlining AI development tools, OpenAI aims to make AI-powered automation more accessible and practical for businesses, researchers, and developers alike.

The Future of AI Agent Development

With these new tools, OpenAI is setting the stage for the next generation of AI-driven automation. Developers can now create AI agents that search the web, analyze data, execute tasks, and collaborate seamlessly.
