Mumbai – In a move that could reshape India’s artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, and Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, are reportedly in advanced discussions with Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) to forge a groundbreaking partnership aimed at expanding AI capabilities across India.

According to a report by The Information, cited by Reuters, both OpenAI and Meta have engaged in separate dialogues with Reliance Jio, the telecom and digital services arm of Reliance Industries, to explore the potential distribution of AI services in the country. The talks, if successful, could see ChatGPT integrated into Jio’s vast digital ecosystem, bringing AI-driven solutions to millions of Indian users.

Jamnagar Data Centre to Host AI Models

As part of the discussions, Reliance Industries has proposed leveraging its upcoming 3-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which is positioned to become one of the world’s largest data centers. This facility is being earmarked to host OpenAI and Meta’s AI models, a move that could ensure local data residency and adhere to India’s stringent data sovereignty norms.

Sources familiar with the matter also revealed that Reliance is considering offering OpenAI’s models to enterprise clients via API services, allowing businesses in India to seamlessly integrate advanced AI tools into their operations.

OpenAI Considers Price Adjustments for India

Internally, OpenAI is reportedly weighing a potential price cut on its premium ChatGPT Plus subscription, currently priced at $20 globally, to better align with the Indian market. While no official pricing has been disclosed, such a move could significantly enhance AI accessibility for Indian startups and enterprises.

Meta’s Strategic Play

For Meta, the partnership aligns with its broader ambitions to deepen its AI footprint in India. The social media giant is exploring joint initiatives with Reliance that focus on generative AI tools, conversational AI for WhatsApp Business, and advanced content moderation tailored for India’s diverse digital landscape.

India’s AI Push Gains Momentum

This potential collaboration comes amid the Indian government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s AI infrastructure under initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission, spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The move could also see Reliance Industries positioned as a leading player in India’s AI space, alongside major domestic IT firms such as Infosys, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

If finalized, this partnership would mark a significant milestone in India’s ambition to become a global AI powerhouse, further intensifying competition with major AI hubs such as China and the United States.
