Baidu Unveils Ernie 4.5 Turbo and X1 Turbo Amid Escalating AI Race in China

BEIJING, China – April 25, 2025 – In a bold move underscoring its ambition to lead China’s rapidly advancing AI sector, Baidu Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU) has unveiled two cutting-edge models — Ernie 4.5 Turbo and Ernie X1 Turbo — aimed at strengthening its foundational AI capabilities and cognitive reasoning offerings.

This strategic announcement comes as Chinese tech conglomerates like Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group ramp up efforts to dominate the burgeoning large language model (LLM) market, a sector projected to grow at a 37.6% CAGR from 2024 to 2032, according to Statista and local consulting firms.

Building on a Legacy of AI Innovation

Baidu’s AI journey began in earnest with the launch of its original ERNIE (Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration) model in 2019. Unlike conventional models, ERNIE gained early recognition for its knowledge-enhanced masking techniques, excelling in both Chinese and English language understanding.

The newly launched Ernie 4.5 Turbo builds on this legacy with improved performance benchmarks in areas such as multi-modal learning, real-time inference, and natural language reasoning. According to internal metrics, the ERNIE ecosystem now processes over 1.5 billion API calls daily, signaling widespread adoption across industries.

Meanwhile, Ernie X1 Turbo is positioned as a reasoning-first model, designed for complex tasks such as decision-making, symbolic logic, and real-time data synthesis — features increasingly demanded by enterprise and government users.

A Fierce Competitive Landscape

Baidu’s move follows a recent announcement from Tencent, which launched Hunyuan T1, its own advanced reasoning model, and pledged substantial capital expenditure for AI infrastructure in 2025. Alibaba’s DAMO Academy is also pushing ahead with its Tongyi Qianwen series, while Huawei recently upgraded its PanGu models, tailored for industries like finance, healthcare, and manufacturing.

These competitive dynamics reflect a broader AI arms race driven by both commercial pressure and national priorities. According to a Goldman Sachs report, AI could contribute up to 0.3 percentage points to China’s GDP growth by 2030, reinforcing why players are racing to build foundational models and establish ecosystem dominance.

National Policy and State Support

Baidu’s AI initiatives are strongly aligned with China’s Next Generation AI Development Plan, which aims to position the nation as a global AI superpower by 2030. Baidu has been officially designated to lead the National Engineering Laboratory of Deep Learning, giving it access to state-backed R&D grants, high-performance computing resources, and elite talent pipelines.

Private investment in Chinese generative AI has ballooned from $650 million in 2023 to over $3.1 billion in 2024, according to PitchBook and local VC databases, fueling a fast-paced innovation ecosystem. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) estimates that over 4,300 AI firms are actively contributing to an industry now valued at $70+ billion.

Looking Ahead

With the launch of Ernie 4.5 Turbo and X1 Turbo, Baidu is not merely responding to competition — it’s reaffirming its vision to become China’s AI backbone. The company is expected to further integrate these models into its flagship products, including Baidu Search, Apollo autonomous driving, Xiaodu smart devices, and Baidu Cloud, enhancing both consumer and enterprise offerings.

As the AI arms race in China heats up, Baidu’s investments in reasoning, infrastructure, and government-aligned AI policy may give it a strategic edge. But with rivals like Tencent, Alibaba, Huawei, and a growing cohort of AI startups vying for the same territory, the road to dominance will require continuous innovation, ethical alignment, and global adaptability.
