Anthropic to Introduce Voice Capabilities for AI Assistant Claude Amid GenAI Surge

San Francisco, CA – April 16, 2025 — AI safety startup Anthropic is preparing to add voice capabilities to its popular artificial intelligence assistant, Claude, marking a significant leap in the race for natural, conversational AI experiences. The feature, dubbed “voice mode,” is expected to roll out later this month, according to a report from Bloomberg citing internal app code and unnamed sources familiar with the development.

Voice-Enabled Claude: A New Chapter in Generative AI

The voice integration will initially feature three distinct voice options, allowing users to interact with Claude in a more human-like, spoken manner. The update is expected to be released in a limited beta phase before wider deployment. While Anthropic has not yet issued an official comment, signs of the feature were spotted in the publicly accessible iOS app code, further hinting at its imminent arrival.

This move puts Anthropic in direct competition with OpenAI and Meta, both of which have already introduced voice capabilities in their AI platforms. OpenAI’s ChatGPT supports real-time spoken conversations, while Meta AI offers celebrity-inspired voices integrated across WhatsApp and Instagram.

Expanded Functionality: Google Workspace and Research Mode

Coinciding with this development, Anthropic also announced two major upgrades to Claude:

  • “Research” Mode – A new capability that enables Claude to retrieve data from both internal enterprise sources and the open web, offering richer contextual answers.
  • Google Workspace Integration – Claude can now access Gmail, Google Calendar, and Docs, positioning it as a workplace productivity enhancer akin to Microsoft Copilot or Google Duet AI.

“These are just the first steps,” Anthropic stated in its press release. “We’ll soon expand Claude’s access to more content types and allow deeper research capabilities.”

Generative AI Revitalizing Voice Assistant Tech

This update comes at a time when voice assistants—once dominated by platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri—are facing stagnation. A recent PYMNTS Intelligence study titled “GenAI and Voice Assistants: Adoption and Trust Across Generations” revealed that traditional voice assistant adoption is plateauing, but GenAI familiarity and trust are surging, especially among younger users.

Key stats from the study:

  • 82% of Gen Z and 78% of Zillennials report being familiar with generative AI.
  • Familiarity among Boomers and Seniors jumped from 23% to 41% year-over-year.
  • 54% of consumers prefer voice over typing for speed and convenience.

Competitive Landscape and Industry Implications

Anthropic’s voice rollout places it in the expanding arena of conversational AI and multimodal agents, alongside:

  • OpenAI – ChatGPT’s voice mode already allows full conversations with memory features.
  • Google DeepMind – Pitched to integrate voice into its Gemini AI models.
  • Amazon – Working on revamping Alexa into a smarter, GenAI-powered assistant.

Industry leaders like Valentin Radu, founder of Omniconvert, argue that voice-first AI isn’t just about convenience. “It’s about creating a real, emotional connection between users and technology,” Radu told PYMNTS.

With voice, Claude could be reimagined not only as a productivity partner but also as a customer engagement tool, learning assistant, or even a therapy companion, depending on application context.

What’s Next for Claude and Anthropic?

Anthropic has received significant funding in recent years, with backing from Google, Salesforce, and Amazon, among others. As the company continues to position Claude as a safe, reliable, and transparent alternative in the competitive GenAI space, this new wave of functionality could catalyze broader adoption across both consumer and enterprise markets.
