ChatGPT Can Now Replace Gemini as the Default Assistant on Android

OpenAI Challenges Google’s AI Dominance

In a major shift for Android users, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now an option to replace Google’s Gemini as the default digital assistant. This update comes with the latest beta version (1.2025.070) of the ChatGPT app, enabling users to set it as their primary AI assistant.

This means that when users activate the assistant—either by long-pressing the power button or swiping up from the corner of the screen—ChatGPT will now be the AI that responds. This development marks a significant expansion of OpenAI’s influence in the mobile AI space, directly challenging Google’s AI assistant ecosystem.

A New Contender in the AI Assistant Battle

For years, Google has dominated the voice assistant market with Google Assistant, and more recently, its advanced AI model, Gemini. However, the growing demand for AI-powered assistants has led to increased competition from companies like OpenAI and Perplexity AI.

By allowing ChatGPT to function as a native assistant on Android, OpenAI is positioning itself as a viable alternative to Gemini. This move aligns with the broader AI competition, where companies are racing to integrate large language models (LLMs) more seamlessly into everyday technology.

How ChatGPT Works as a Default Assistant

When ChatGPT is set as the default assistant:

  • Activation: Users can launch it by long-pressing the power button or using the swipe-up gesture from the bottom corners.
  • Overlay Mode: Initially, ChatGPT opens in full chat mode before switching to an overlay interface for easier interaction.
  • Voice Mode: Users can interact with ChatGPT using voice commands, similar to how they would with Google Assistant or Siri.
  • Quick Settings Integration: A new shortcut introduced in early 2025 allows for faster access to ChatGPT from the Android Quick Settings menu.

This integration provides an AI-powered alternative that many users may find appealing, especially given OpenAI’s leadership in generative AI.

Limitations and Future Improvements

Since this feature is still in beta, it lacks some refinements compared to Google’s Gemini or Perplexity AI. For instance:

  • ChatGPT does not yet have deep system integration like Google Assistant, meaning it may struggle with tasks like controlling smart home devices or setting alarms directly through system commands.
  • Some latency has been reported when transitioning between chat and overlay modes.
  • Multimodal capabilities, such as analyzing images or real-time language translation, are still being improved.

However, OpenAI is actively working on enhancements, and future updates could bring a more seamless experience. Given OpenAI’s rapid advancements in GPT-4o and beyond, it is likely that ChatGPT will continue to evolve into a powerful AI assistant for Android users.

What This Means for the Future of AI Assistants

Google now faces increasing competition in the AI assistant space. While Gemini remains deeply integrated into Android, OpenAI’s move to allow ChatGPT as a default option suggests a shift in how users may interact with AI.

With Samsung, Microsoft, and other tech giants also investing in AI-powered features, the battle for AI dominance on smartphones is heating up. As AI assistants become more advanced, the ability to choose between multiple AI models could become a defining feature of future Android devices.

For now, users interested in testing ChatGPT as their assistant can update to the latest beta version and enable it via system settings. This marks a step toward a more open and competitive AI ecosystem on mobile devices.
