Amazon Refutes Claims That Anthropic’s AI Powers Advanced Alexa Features

Amazon has officially denied reports suggesting that its advanced Alexa capabilities rely on Anthropic’s AI model, Claude. The company clarified that its proprietary AI model, Nova, is responsible for handling the majority of Alexa’s interactions, including complex user queries.

Amazon Dismisses External AI Involvement

Recent reports from CNBC suggested that Anthropic’s Claude large language model was powering most of Alexa’s upgraded features. However, Amazon swiftly refuted these claims, labeling the information as “false.”

“In fact, over the past four weeks, Nova handled over 70% of conversations — including complex requests,” an Amazon spokesperson stated, emphasizing that Alexa’s AI advancements are primarily driven by in-house technology.

Despite Amazon’s significant investment in Anthropic, the company maintains that Alexa operates independently of Claude. “From a customer perspective, this doesn’t matter — both are excellent models, and they are here to deliver the best experience for users,” the spokesperson added.

Alexa+ and the AI Evolution

The latest version of Alexa, dubbed Alexa+, integrates generative AI to enhance conversational abilities, automate tasks, and provide smarter responses. It can now perform functions such as ordering groceries, booking rides, and scheduling services via Alexa.com and a new mobile application.

However, Alexa+ has faced challenges, including reported delays and inaccuracies in responses. Some early users noted instances of AI “hallucinations,” where the system generated incorrect or misleading information during testing.

The Broader AI Landscape

Amazon’s AI push aligns with a growing trend in voice-controlled AI assistants. Market research suggests that nearly two-thirds of U.S. consumers have interacted with AI-driven voice technology in the past year, underscoring a shift toward hands-free digital interactions.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the transformative impact of foundation models and generative AI, stating, “A few years ago, AI development was challenging, but the rise of foundational models has made it much more accessible, allowing people to see its true potential.”

What’s Next for Alexa?

With Amazon continuing to refine its AI-powered voice assistant, the focus remains on improving accuracy, responsiveness, and seamless integration across smart devices. While speculation persists regarding external AI contributions, Amazon stands firm in its assertion that Nova is the driving force behind Alexa+’s enhanced capabilities.

As the competition in AI-powered voice assistants heats up, Amazon’s commitment to innovation and in-house AI development will be key in shaping the future of intelligent virtual assistants.
